What's New?

Andrew Tatarsky and Mark Sehl presented an overview of Harm Reduction Psychotherapy to the counseling staff at Columbia University and The New School for Social Research. A lively discussion followed the presentations and key issues were raised by the counseling staff.

New: The Drinker's Check-up (www.drinkerscheckup.com) is a program for heavy drinkers who are ambivalent about their drinking. It begins with a brief screening with personalized feedback about whether a person might benefit from going through the entire program/site. Once you register to use the site there are 3 modules: Looking at your drinking, Get feedback, and Decide what to do.
The Look at your drinking section allows the user to take a close look at his or her drinking, risk factors for alcohol problems, consequences, symptoms of dependence, and motivation for change.
The Get feedback module provides personalized, objective feedback based on the answers given in the previous section.
The Decide what to do helps the person resolve their ambivalence about whether or not to change. If the person decides to change the program helps in goal setting and developing a plan of action.

(College Age and Adult)

Are you concerned about your drinking or drug use but not sure what to do next? Perhaps you've tried to set reasonable limits or gain greater control over your use but have not had the success you were looking for. Maybe you are clear about stopping one substance that has been problematic for you but are not interested in a complete abstinence goal. Join us and pursue these goals in a supportive atmosphere where you won't be judged or measured by someone else's standards.

These groups will be open to exploring issues of interest to group members such as:

· What your substance use means to you and the part it plays in your life
· Exploring ambivalence and enhancing motivation to make positive changes
· Clarifying personal goals regarding substance use and other personal issues
· Your sense of purpose and gaining greater fulfillment from life
· Identifying your ideal, healthiest relationship to substances
· Developing a personal plan for change
· Learning strategies for greater safety, self-care, and lasting change
